2024 Paris Paralympics Closes with Record-Breaking Performances and Tribute to Rebecca Cheptegei

The 2024 Paris Paralympics came to a memorable close with two world records set on the final day, capped by a spectacular light show at the Stade de France. French electronic music icon Jean-Michel Jarre electrified the atmosphere, setting the stage for a celebration of athleticism and unity. However, the joyous occasion was tinged with sorrow as spectators paid tribute to Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically lost her life after being attacked by her partner just days before.

Two World Records Set on Final Day

The final day of competition saw remarkable achievements, with Morocco's Fatima Ezzahra El Idrissi smashing the world record in the women's marathon for visually impaired runners. El Idrissi completed the 42-kilometer course in 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 36 seconds, shattering the previous record by nearly six minutes. "I wasn't running for a time, only for a medal," the 29-year-old shared after her victory, highlighting the emotional drive behind her performance.

In the women's para powerlifting event, Nigeria's Folashade Oluwafemiayo once again demonstrated her dominance. The 39-year-old broke her own world record not once, but twice, bench-pressing 167 kilograms to claim gold in the over 86kg category. Oluwafemiayo had already surpassed her previous record in the third round by lifting 166 kilograms, only to push the boundaries further with an additional kilogram in her final attempt, much to the delight of the crowd at La Chapelle Arena.

The celebratory atmosphere was poignantly interrupted as the crowd at the marathon's finish line paid tribute to Rebecca Cheptegei. The Ugandan runner, who competed in the Paris Olympics just last month, was honored with a minute's applause as her image was displayed on a large screen. The announcer referred to her as a "victim of femicide," a stark reminder of the tragedy that claimed her life. Cheptegei’s untimely death, after being set on fire by her partner, cast a shadow over the closing festivities, but also underscored the importance of addressing gender-based violence.

China Dominates the Medal Table

As the Paralympic Games concluded, China solidified its status as a powerhouse in adaptive sports, amassing a staggering 220 medals, including 94 golds. This total nearly doubled the gold medal count of second-place Britain, which finished with 49 golds and a total of 124 medals. The United States followed with 105 medals, while host nation France ended in eighth place with 19 gold medals among its 75 total.
