A Santorini Mirage in the Arabian Desert: Unveiling the Anantara Retreat

magine a vision of Santorini – cascading whitewashed buildings, azure waters, and a distinctly Mediterranean ambiance.  Surprisingly, this picture-perfect scene isn't nestled in the Aegean Sea, but amidst the vast desert landscape of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Here lies the Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat, a luxurious escape that captures the essence of the Greek island, with a unique Arabian twist.

More Than Just a Replica

Opened in February 2024, the Anantara Santorini is a deliberate homage to its namesake. Stepping into this haven, guests are transported to a world of white, beige, and blue hues, accentuated by arched walkways and doorways. Every detail, from the bespoke artwork and ambient music to the intricate embroidery on linens, contributes to a meticulously crafted Mediterranean fantasy.

Finding Harmony in the Desert

Rachid Bakas, the resort's general manager, emphasizes how Abu Dhabi's natural beauty complements the Santorini inspiration.  "The color of the sea next to us truly brings the concept together," he explains. "The spirit of Santorini blends seamlessly with this location, making the design truly immaculate."

Exclusivity at a Premium

While replicating an established destination might not typically be synonymous with luxury, the Anantara Santorini presents a compelling exception. With room rates starting at approximately $800 per night, this resort positions itself as a premium offering. Compared to the average Santorini hotel prices during peak season, the Anantara is considerably more expensive (according to TripAdvisor data).

Beyond Santorini: A Focus on Privacy and Tranquility

So, why choose the Anantara Santorini in Abu Dhabi over a trip to the original Greek island?  In Bakas's words, "It's exclusive." The resort prioritizes privacy and intimacy, offering a secluded haven in contrast to Santorini's bustling high season crowds.

A World of Discovery Within

Architecturally, the Anantara Santorini is an intimate space with only 22 rooms, accommodating a maximum of 44 guests. Each room opens onto a spacious living area, fostering a sense of community and encouraging guests to explore the resort's various environments.  "The element of surprise is within the hotel itself," says Bakas. "From the moment you arrive, you'll keep discovering beautiful corners and hidden spaces."

Beyond Activities: A Focus on Relaxation

While amenities like a cigar lounge, cinema, spa, and poolside yoga sessions are offered, the core focus remains on providing a tranquil escape. The resort prioritizes guest autonomy, offering space and freedom from constant activity planning. "Sometimes, people just want to unwind and relax," explains Bakas. "We aim to offer that perfect balance."

Adults Only: A Commitment to Serenity

Further contributing to the tranquil atmosphere is the resort's age policy – a minimum age requirement of 18, even for guests accompanied by adults. This ensures a peaceful environment for all visitors.

A Unique Escape Awaits

The Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat stands out as a bold and luxurious experiment – a successful marriage of Greek inspiration and Arabian hospitality. It caters to discerning travelers seeking a unique escape, offering tranquility, exclusivity and a meticulously crafted environment unlike any other.
