A recent study has unveiled the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize in vitro fertilisation (IVF), offering hope to millions of people struggling with infertility. IVF involves extracting an egg from a woman’s ovaries and fertilizing it in a lab with sperm. If fertilization is successful, the resulting embryo is implanted in the uterus. Despite advancements in the field, IVF success rates remain variable, influenced by numerous factors.

One critical step in the IVF process is determining the optimal time to administer a hormonal injection known as the "trigger," which prepares the egg-containing follicles for collection. Traditionally, doctors rely on ultrasound imaging to evaluate follicle size. However, a new AI-driven approach could significantly refine this process.


AI Findings: Optimizing Follicle Monitoring

Using data from over 19,000 IVF patients, researchers discovered that delivering the hormonal trigger when a larger proportion of follicles measured between 13 and 18 millimeters improved the chances of retrieving mature eggs and achieving live births.

Dr. Ali Abbara, co-senior author and reader in endocrinology at Imperial College London, stated:

“IVF produces so much rich data that it can be challenging for doctors to fully make use of all of it. Our study has shown that AI methods are well-suited to analyzing complex IVF data.”

The findings, published in Nature Communications, pave the way for AI tools capable of offering personalized treatment recommendations, potentially boosting the success rate of IVF procedures.


The Broader Impact of AI in Healthcare

Explainable AI could transform healthcare by aiding doctors in making informed, data-driven decisions. Dr. Thomas Heinis, a reader in computing and co-author of the study, highlighted the role of computing power in improving decision-making:

The research team plans to test their AI tool in clinical trials, aiming to make personalized fertility treatments a mainstream reality.

Infertility affects 1 in 6 people globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

  • In 2019, IVF success rates ranged from 32% for women under 35 to just 4% for women over 44, per the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

  • Male infertility is also on the rise, with 1 in 20 men experiencing reduced fertility due to factors such as exposure to chemicals, increasing obesity rates, and delayed parenthood trends.

As fertility treatments become more accessible, advancements like AI-driven IVF optimization promise to improve outcomes and reduce the emotional and financial toll on couples.
