Brits Trust French to Tame Seine for Safe Olympics

British Triathlon is expressing confidence in French authorities' ability to deliver a safe swimming experience in the Seine River for the upcoming Paris Olympics. This comes despite concerns raised about potential pollution levels in the river.

The triathlon and open-water swimming competitions are scheduled to take place in the Seine, but organizers have faced criticism for not having a backup plan in case heavy rainfall renders the water unsuitable for competition. The current strategy relies on a newly built storage basin to manage pollution risks, along with contingency days that allow for schedule adjustments if necessary.

Mike Cavendish, Director of Performance at British Triathlon, highlights the organization's past experience with water quality issues at major events. Speaking to Reuters, he stated, "Every single Olympic Games, Paralympic Games we've been to, there is usually something environmentally and usually water-related that we're dealing with." This implies a level of trust in the ability of organizers to address such challenges.

The lack of a dedicated backup location has caused some concern, but British Triathlon appears confident that French authorities will ensure the Seine meets safety standards for the competition. Whether this optimism proves justified remains to be seen, but for now, athletes are preparing to take on the challenge of the Parisian
