China has emerged as the global leader in the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI), according to a recent survey. The study revealed that over 80% of Chinese company executives have integrated this cutting-edge technology into their operations, significantly higher than the 65% reported in the United States.
The findings are the result of a survey conducted with 1,600 decision-makers from various sectors around the globe. This research was carried out by the American AI and analytics software company SAS, in collaboration with Coleman Parkes Research, and reported by Reuters.
The survey highlights that 83% of Chinese respondents have utilized generative AI (GenAI), a percentage that surpasses those of respondents from the other 16 countries and regions included in the study. In contrast, 65% of respondents in the United States reported the use of GenAI, while the global average stood at 54%. The survey covered sectors such as banking, insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, and energy.
These results underscore China's significant advancements in generative AI, a field that gained widespread attention in 2022 after the American company OpenAI launched ChatGPT. Following this, numerous Chinese companies began investing heavily to develop their own versions of generative AI.
Last week, a report from the United Nations' World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) indicated that China is leading the race for GenAI patents. The country filed over 38,000 patent applications between 2014 and 2023, compared to 6,276 filed by the United States in the same period.
China's progress in generative AI is further bolstered by its restrictive policies towards many international AI service providers, like OpenAI. This has created a favorable environment for the growth of its domestic AI industry. Companies such as ByteDance and startups like Zhipu have been particularly prominent in this sector.
The SAS report suggests that the current trends indicate an expected increase in the number of enterprises adopting AI in the future. It also highlights that China leads the world in continuous automated monitoring (CAM), a technology crucial for AI training but raising privacy concerns.
China's strides in generative AI and its proactive approach to developing a robust national AI industry demonstrate the country's commitment to maintaining its leadership in this transformative technology. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, China's advancements will likely influence global trends and standards in artificial intelligence.
