  • Unprecedented Speed: HydRON aims to achieve terabit-per-second internet speeds, significantly faster than current satellite or fiber optic options.

Beyond Point-to-Point: Building a Multi-Orbit Network

The HydRON project involves a two-pronged approach:

  1. Scientific Research: This phase focuses on developing the technology needed for the mega-constellation.

  2. Early Bird Demonstration: This initial network will test the feasibility of the system and pave the way for a larger-scale rollout.

HydRON will utilize a combination of low-orbit satellites for data transmission and geostationary satellites for wider coverage. These core nodes will work together seamlessly, minimizing reliance on ground systems.



From Research to Reality: A Phased Launch Plan

While the exact number of satellites is yet to be determined, the project is currently in its final design phase. Thales Alenia Space, a leading aerospace manufacturer, is involved in building the low-orbit satellites and the onboard routing technology for efficient data flow within the network.

The project targets a phased launch between 2027 and 2029 for the initial demonstration network.

While SpaceX might have a head start with private network development, ESA's focus on public-sector clients initially could offer long-term benefits. The agency expects both private and public providers to utilize the HydRON network once fully operational.
