Pizza may have originated in Italy, but it has become a beloved dish worldwide, with some cities outside Italy now home to top-rated pizzerias. In fact, while Rome remains the best place for pizza in Europe, other cities are gaining recognition for serving world-class slices.
Europe’s Best Pizza Spots Outside of Italy
According to a study by Chef’s Pencil, which analyzed cities with the most entries in the global 50 Top Pizza rankingsover the past six years, some unexpected European cities have made the list. Surprisingly, London surpasses Paris with 16 top-rated pizzerias, compared to Paris’s 14.
One standout pizzeria in London is Napoli on the Road in Chiswick, ranked as the best pizzeria in Europe outside of Italy and placed fifth on the Top 50 Pizza list for 2024.
In Italy, the top spot goes to Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples, ranked the second-best pizzeria globally and the best in Europe. Other major cities known for their pizza expertise include Madrid and Copenhagen, each boasting six elite pizzerias over recent years. Madrid’s Revelry, currently 26th on the Top 50 list, is a prime example of the city's rising pizza scene.
In Brussels and Moscow, pizza lovers can find five pizzerias each that rank among Europe’s best, showcasing the widespread appeal of this Italian favorite across the continent.
Cities Most Obsessed with Pizza
The study also looked at which cities have the deepest passion for pizza, based on Google searches related to pizza. Unsurprisingly, Philadelphia came out on top, fueled by its large Italian community, with searches ranging from “best local pizza” to “pizza recipes.” It was closely followed by Naples and Turin in Italy.
The Best Pizzeria in the World
On a global scale, New York took the title of the best city for pizza in 2024, according to the Top 50 Pizza ranking. The top spot was claimed by Una Pizza Napoletana, which features authentic Neapolitan-style pizza.
Another surprise is Tokyo, which tied with Naples and Rome for the number of elite pizzerias. Tokyo's place among the pizza elite stems from Japan's dedication to perfecting culinary crafts, despite lacking the long-standing Italian pizza tradition.
