Fatty Acid Breakthrough! Scientists Find Clue to How Life Began on Earth

Scientists have taken a major leap forward in understanding the origins of life on Earth. A new study has successfully simulated the formation of fatty acids, a crucial building block for cell membranes, in conditions believed to be similar to those of early Earth.

Recreating Ancient Environments

The research team focused on deep-sea hydrothermal vents, long considered a possible cradle of life due to their presence of warm water rich in minerals and dissolved gases. By simulating these conditions in a lab setting, they were able to generate fatty acids from a mixture of pressurized hydrogen gas, dissolved carbon dioxide, and iron-bearing minerals.
