Fewer Romanians Employed in Public Sector in March 2024

The number of people employed in public institutions and authorities in Romania decreased slightly in March 2024.


A total of 1,289,540 people were employed in the public sector in March, 425 fewer than in the previous month.

This represents a 0.04% decrease in the overall number of public sector employees.

Close to 64% of public sector employees work in central public administration.


Decreases in Central Public Administration:

  • The number of employees in central public administration decreased by 1,155 in March compared to February.

  • A total of 823,890 people were employed in central public administration in March.

  • Within this group, 606,862 worked in institutions fully financed from the state budget, a decrease of 1,458 employees from February.


Key Ministries with Decreases:

  • The Ministry of Education saw the largest decrease in employees, with 1,061 fewer positions filled in March.

  • The Ministry of Internal Affairs had 264 fewer employees, while the Ministry of Finance had 27 fewer.

  • The Ministry of Health also saw a decrease of 26 employees.


Slight Increases in Other Sectors:

  • There were slight increases in the number of employees in institutions fully financed from social insurance funds (11 more) and those subsidized from the state budget and unemployment insurance budget (16 more).

  • The number of employees in institutions fully financed from their own revenues increased by 298.



Local Public Administration:

  • The number of people employed in local public administration increased by 730 in March, reaching a total of 465,650.


Overall, the slight decrease in public sector employment in March 2024 reflects a broader trend of streamlining public administration in Romania.
