Denying "Smoke Weed" Advice

German police have firmly denied recommending cannabis use to visiting Euro 2024 fans. The denial comes in response to a report by The Sun, which claimed a police spokesman, Stephan Knipp, stated it was "no problem" for fans to smoke cannabis in public.

The Sun quoted Knipp suggesting police would prioritize monitoring alcohol-consuming groups over those smoking cannabis, citing a perceived link between alcohol and aggression.


Gelsenkirchen Police Dispel Rumors

Gelsenkirchen police, where one of the Euro 2024 host cities is located, have labeled The Sun's report "false." Their primary focus, according to German news outlet The Local.de, is to "ensure the safety of the fans" and address aggressive behavior, regardless of the source of intoxication.


Germany's Legal Cannabis Landscape

While the recreational use of cannabis became legal in Germany on a federal level in April 2024, specific regulations exist. Individuals are permitted to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public spaces, and up to 50 grams at home.Growing up to three cannabis plants is also allowed.

Germany became the third European Union nation to legalize recreational cannabis, following Malta in 2021 and Luxembourg in 2023. Over 50 countries worldwide currently permit the medicinal use of cannabis.
