J-Lo Blasts Off in "Atlas": A Familiar Yet Fun Sci-Fi Romp

Love her or hate her, Jennifer Lopez seems to have the magic touch when it comes to streaming algorithms.  Hot on the heels of "The Mother," "Shotgun Wedding," and "Marry Me," Lopez delivers another action-packed performance in "Atlas," a new sci-fi offering on Netflix.

AI on the Rampage

"Atlas" follows the well-worn path of artificial intelligence gone rogue.  Harlan, a sentient robot created by Lopez's character, Atlas Shepherd (a brilliant data analyst), turns against humanity.  The film opens with a glimpse of this devastating AI attack before fast-forwarding 28 years into the future.

An Unexpected Reunion

Now a seasoned but jaded data analyst, Atlas is recruited by the military (played by underutilized Mark Strong and Sterling K. Brown) to track down and stop Harlan.  Despite initial resistance, she finds herself teamed up with another AI (voiced by Gregory James Cohan) for survival.

A Familiar Formula

The core concept of forced bonding with a once-feared entity is a classic trope in science fiction. "Atlas" doesn't break new ground narratively, and its robot design bears a striking resemblance to suits seen in "Avatar" or "Aliens."

Thrills Over Originality

Despite its lack of originality, "Atlas" prioritizes action.  Director Brad Peyton, known for action flicks like "Rampage" and "San Andreas," keeps the pace brisk, relying on familiar beats that cater to a "check-your-brain-at-the-door" viewing experience.

J-Lo Redefined

This film marks a departure for Lopez, who steps away from the rom-com genre and takes on a more action-oriented role.  She also serves as a producer, showcasing her versatility in the film industry.

The Bottom Line

While the financial equation behind "Atlas" might be puzzling, the film's combination of J-Lo's star power and a familiar sci-fi formula seems to be a calculated move by Netflix to attract a specific audience.  If you're looking for a thought-provoking sci-fi experience, "Atlas" might not be it.  However, if you're in the mood for a fun, action-packed adventure with a touch of J-Lo charm, then this movie might just hit the spot.
