Las Vegas Says Farewell to an Icon: The Mirage Shuts Down After 34 Years

The dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip will dim a little further this summer as the Mirage Hotel and Casino prepares to close its doors after 34 years in operation.

A Pioneering Legacy

Opened in 1989 by casino mogul Steve Wynn, the Mirage ushered in a new era of luxury resorts for Las Vegas. It was one of the first to feature a themed design, transporting guests to a Polynesian paradise complete with a signature erupting volcano. The Mirage's innovative approach helped to redefine the Las Vegas experience, inspiring other resorts to embrace elaborate theming and entertainment spectacles.

Beyond the Volcano: A Hub for Entertainment

The Mirage wasn't just about the erupting volcano. It also housed a variety of popular attractions, including the Siegfried & Roy white tiger show (which ran for over a decade) and a Cirque du Soleil production set to Beatles music. These high-profile offerings solidified the Mirage's position as a major entertainment destination on the Strip.

A Changing Landscape

The decision to close the Mirage reflects the evolving landscape of the Las Vegas hospitality industry. With newer, more opulent resorts constantly opening, older properties like the Mirage face pressure to compete.

What's Next for the Mirage?

Hard Rock International, which acquired the Mirage in 2022, has announced plans for a major transformation. The resort will close on July 17th, 2024, to undergo a three-year renovation project. When it reopens in 2027, it will be reborn as the Hard Rock Las Vegas, featuring a sleek, guitar-shaped hotel tower and a completely revamped experience.

The End of an Era

The closing of the Mirage marks the end of an era for Las Vegas. It's a bittersweet moment for many who have cherished memories of the resort's iconic volcano, captivating shows, and luxurious atmosphere. While the Mirage may be fading into the Las Vegas sunset, its legacy will continue to influence the city's ever-evolving entertainment scene.

Short Description:

Las Vegas legend bids farewell! The Mirage closes its doors after 34 years, making way for the Hard Rock Las Vegas with a rockin' guitar-shaped hotel tower.
