A phone call in May 2023 brought an end to a decades-long mystery for South African artist Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi. At the age of 80, she received news that would have her cry out in joy: "My babies, my babies," she exclaimed – her artworks, missing for over 30 years, had been found.
A Life Dedicated to Art
Sebidi's artistic journey began in 1943 near Hammanskraal, South Africa. Raised by her grandmother, a traditional painter, Sebidi's artistic talent was nurtured from a young age. She left school early to work as a domestic worker and support her family, but her passion for art never faded.
In her late twenties, Sebidi finally had the opportunity to take official art classes under the guidance of John Koenakeefe Mohl, a prominent Black South African artist and educator. Through the Johannesburg Art Foundation, Sebidi participated in "Art in the park," a monthly event showcasing the works of aspiring artists who wouldn't have access to traditional university programs.
A Mysterious Disappearance
However, Sebidi's artistic path took a dramatic turn in 1991. Several of her artworks mysteriously vanished. For over three decades, the artist held onto hope, her "babies" lost and their whereabouts unknown.
A Joyous Return
The 2023 phone call finally brought closure. Sebidi's artworks had been located in Sweden, and arrangements were made to return them to their rightful owner. This heartwarming story highlights the enduring power of art and the perseverance of an artist who never gave up on her creations.
