In an effort to curb "unruly tourism," authorities in the Spanish Balearic Islands have announced a ban on alcohol sales in certain beach areas and public spaces in Mallorca and Ibiza.
The ban will be in effect from 9:30 pm to 8:00 am, with the exception of alcohol consumption on party boats. Violators face fines of up to €1,500.
Tackling Excessive Alcohol Consumption
The new restrictions represent a tightening of a law initially introduced by the Balearic Islands government four years ago to combat excessive alcohol consumption. The 2020 legislation banned happy hours, pub crawls, and two-for-one drink deals, prohibited alcohol sales in stores between 9:30 pm and 8:00 am, and restricted party boats from advertising in designated areas, as reported by Yahoo News.
Combating Unruly Tourist Behavior
The Balearic Islands, particularly Mallorca and Ibiza, have long been popular tourist destinations, renowned for their vibrant nightlife and party scene. However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern about the behavior of some tourists, particularly those under the influence of alcohol. This behavior has been linked to noise disturbances, public intoxication, and vandalism.
Seeking a More Sustainable Tourism Model
The Balearic Islands government hopes that the new alcohol ban will help to reduce unruly tourist behavior and promote a more sustainable tourism model. The authorities believe that the ban will encourage tourists to enjoy the islands' attractions in a more responsible and respectful manner.
