Millions of Romanians Suffer from Hypertension: Awareness and Control Key to Saving Lives

Hypertension: A Silent Threat Affecting Millions in Romania

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, poses a significant public health challenge in Romania, with millions of individuals suffering from this condition. Despite its prevalence, a substantial proportion of cases remain undiagnosed and untreated, leading to preventable complications and deaths.

Prevalence and Impact of Hypertension in Romania

According to the Romanian Society of Hypertension, an estimated 6.6 million Romanians have hypertension. However, only 68% of these individuals are aware of their condition, and an even lower proportion, 59%, receive proper treatment.Worryingly, only 30% of those treated have their blood pressure adequately controlled.

These alarming statistics highlight the critical need for increased awareness and improved management of hypertension in Romania. If the control rate for hypertension could be raised to 50%, experts estimate that over 140,000 lives could be saved within the next 15 years.

Hypertension: A Leading Cause of Cardiovascular Diseases

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death in Romania. The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes over 60% of cardiovascular deaths in the country to hypertension.

In 2023, the WHO reported a hypertension prevalence of 48% among Romanian adults aged 30 to 79 years, significantly exceeding the global average of around 35%.

Call to Action: Prioritizing Hypertension Management

On World Hypertension Day, the Romanian Society of Hypertension urges all individuals to take proactive steps to manage their blood pressure. Regular blood pressure checks are crucial for early detection and timely intervention.

"Hypertension is often a silent killer with no noticeable symptoms," emphasizes Professor Theodora Benedek, President of the Romanian Society of Hypertension. "Regular blood pressure monitoring is essential to identify and manage this condition effectively."

Collective Efforts to Combat Hypertension

Addressing the hypertension crisis in Romania requires a multifaceted approach involving healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public.

  • Increased Awareness Campaigns: Public education campaigns are essential to raise awareness about hypertension, its risk factors, and the importance of regular blood pressure checks.

  • Improved Access to Prevention and Treatment: Expanding access to preventive care and ensuring timely treatment for diagnosed cases are crucial to effectively manage hypertension and reduce its burden on the healthcare system.

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Encouraging healthy lifestyle choices, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation, can significantly contribute to blood pressure control and overall cardiovascular health.

By prioritizing hypertension awareness, prevention, and treatment, Romania can make significant strides towards reducing the devastating impact of cardiovascular diseases and improving the overall health and well-being of its citizens.
