Details of the Second Implant

Elon Musk revealed the news during an extensive podcast with Lex Fridman. He mentioned that the second patient, like the first, suffers from a spinal cord injury, which has left them paralyzed. The device, featuring 1,024 electrodes, has been successfully implanted with 400 electrodes currently active and functioning. Musk expressed optimism about the success of the procedure, stating, "I don't want to jinx it, but it seems to have gone extremely well with the second implant."



Functionality and Patient Experiences

The technology is designed to read brain signals and translate them into commands for digital devices. The first patient, Noland Arbaugh, who also appeared on the podcast, shared his experience. Before receiving the implant in January, Arbaugh had to use a stick in his mouth to operate a tablet. Now, he can navigate the internet, play video games, and even post on social media simply by thinking. Despite initial issues with the implant's wires retracting, Neuralink has since improved the device's sensitivity, allowing Arbaugh to achieve record speeds in controlling a cursor.

Musk indicated that Neuralink plans to implant the device in eight more patients as part of its clinical trials this year. The company continues to refine its technology and processes, hoping to expand the capabilities and accessibility of its brain-machine interface.
