New Car Registrations Increase by 14% in Romania in May

In May, Romania saw a significant increase in new car registrations, rising by approximately 14% compared to the same period last year. Over 15,000 new cars were registered, with Dacia dominating the market. This surge is largely attributed to the adjustments in the Rabla program, which incentivizes new car purchases.

Discover how new car registrations in Romania surged by 14% in May compared to last year, driven by the Rabla program adjustments. Explore the impact on both new and second-hand car markets.

Market Trends and Rabla Program Impact

Despite the notable increase in May, new car registrations have stagnated since the beginning of the year. Conversely, the second-hand car market has grown by over 10%, influenced by changes to the Rabla program.

  • Rabla Program: The Rabla program, aimed at renewing Romania's car fleet, saw significant adjustments this year. The reduction in subsidies for electric and hybrid vehicles has impacted new car registrations, leading to a modest 1% growth in the first four months of the year.

  • Second-Hand Market: Over 125,000 second-hand cars were registered for the first time in Romania in the first four months of 2024, with an additional 25,000 registered in May. Although this represents a 10% growth year-to-date, it is a 10% decrease compared to May 2023.

Dominance of Dacia and Other Brands

From January to May 2024, more than 19,000 new Dacia models were registered in Romania. Dacia's sales outpaced those of other leading brands such as Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Ford, and Mercedes combined.

Future Outlook

The overall automotive market in Romania is experiencing dynamic shifts due to the Rabla program's adjustments and economic factors influencing both new and second-hand car registrations. As the industry adapts to these changes, it will be crucial to monitor the evolving trends and their implications on consumer behavior.

Key Insights:

  • New Car Registrations: +14% increase in May 2024 compared to May 2023.

  • Second-Hand Car Market: +10% growth year-to-date, with a slight decline in May registrations compared to last year.

  • Dacia's Market Leadership: Over 19,000 new models registered from January to May 2024.

The Romanian automotive market is witnessing a period of transformation, driven by changes in the Rabla program and varying consumer preferences. While new car registrations saw a significant boost in May, the second-hand market continues to thrive. Keeping an eye on these trends will be essential for stakeholders in the automotive industry.
