European and Asian Universities

The best-performing European universities include:

  • University of Oxford (1st globally)

  • University of Cambridge (5th globally)

  • Imperial College London (9th globally)

  • ETH Zurich (11th globally)

Germany's Technical University of Munich ranked 26th globally, the highest-ever position for a German university. However, European universities overall saw declines, with some top institutions from France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland slipping in the rankings.

In contrast, Asian universities, particularly from China and South Korea, are steadily rising. Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, noted that competition from Asia is increasing, with mainland China and South Korea making significant gains.

The Methodology Behind the Rankings

The 2025 THE World University Rankings evaluated more than 2,000 universities from 115 countries across 18 performance indicators in five categories:

  1. Teaching (learning environment)

  2. Research (volume, income, and reputation)

  3. Research quality (citations and impact)

  4. International outlook (staff, students, and research)

  5. Industry income (knowledge transfer)

The focus on research quality and international collaboration helped propel institutions from the U.S. and U.K. to the top, though European universities are starting to lose ground.

Rising Competition in Global Education

While the U.S. and U.K. continue to lead, the 2025 THE rankings indicate a changing global landscape, with Asia on the rise and Europe facing challenges. Institutions around the world are increasingly focused on innovation and international collaboration to stay competitive in this dynamic environment.
