Climatologist Michael Dukes from MetDesk commented, "What we are witnessing in Antarctica is a stark illustration of the most significant impacts of anthropogenic climate change, with polar regions being particularly vulnerable."


This extreme weather event is the second of its kind in the past two years. In March 2022, the region experienced a peak temperature of 39°C, which led to the collapse of a portion of the ice shelf the size of Rome. Scientists warn that the continuation of such warming trends, even during the Southern Hemisphere's winter, could lead to further ice shelf collapses.

The recent temperature surge coincides with the strong manifestation of the El Niño phenomenon, known for elevating global temperatures. Dukes explained, "The high temperatures in Antarctica are likely a delayed effect of the strong El Niño, combined with the ongoing trend of rising global temperatures."

Additionally, a weakened polar vortex has contributed to the current heatwave. The polar vortex, a mass of cold, low-pressure air rotating around the poles, has been disrupted by atmospheric heatwaves, leading to warmer conditions over the continent.
