Romania to have 1.7 million smart meters by the end of the year

Rețele Electrice companies have announced that by the end of the year, approximately 53% of customers in Muntenia, 50% in Banat and 59% in Dobrogea will have smart meters. Thus, the total number of such meters installed by the three companies will reach approximately 1.7 million by the end of 2024, setting a record in the field, being the largest volume of smart meters implemented by an electricity distribution operator in Romania, according to Economedia.

"These smart meters are the foundation of a more digitized and resilient distribution network. By integrating them into the electricity distribution infrastructure, we improve the interface with our customers, we have the possibility to develop and provide support for new market services such as flexibility and/or aggregation of electricity transit.

The integration of distributed production, as well as energy storage in distribution networks cannot be done without smart metering, thus through our commitment to install a smart meter at each of our customers, whether they are consumers, producers or prosumers, we make a significant contribution to the achievement of the energy transition in Romania", said Mihai Pește, general manager of Rețele Electrice companies.

In order to achieve the set targets, the Rețele Electrice companies have continued to install smart meters in Banat, Dobrogea and Muntenia, in accordance with the implementation schedule established by the National Authority for Energy Regulation (ANRE) since 2015. At present, it is estimated that over 171,000 smart meters will be installed this year.

More precisely, by the end of 2024, the three Rețele Electrice companies remain leaders in the electricity distribution segment in Romania in terms of smart metering, with approximately 1.7 million smart meters installed for residential customers and companies: over 783,000 at Rețele Electrice Muntenia (which serves Bucharest and the Ilfov and Giurgiu counties), over 480,000 at Rețele Electrice Banat (Arad, Caraș Severin, Hunedoara and Timiș counties), and over 412,000 at Rețele Electrice Dobrogea (Călărași, Constanța, Ialomița and Tulcea counties).

As explained by the authorities and the companies, these smart meters are a modern form of measuring devices, which gradually replace the old meters according to the plans approved by ANRE. This transition does not involve any additional costs for customers.

When a smart meter becomes part of a smart metering system and communicates actively with the central system, customers enjoy multiple advantages, including eliminating the need to manually transmit the index and billing based on actual consumption.
