The Romanian government has announced a major investment in the country's communications infrastructure. Specifically, the executive has given the green light to a memorandum through which approximately 1,000 localities will benefit from a high-speed internet connection, with a minimum transfer rate of 100 Mbps and will be automatically integrated into the 5G infrastructure, according to News.ro.
This project, as explained by the Minister of Research, Bogdan Ivan, which aims to extend access to high-speed internet, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. He explains that the Applicant's Guide is already available on the MCID website, and has launched an appeal to "all interested companies to consult it and come up with concrete proposals as soon as possible, and on June 26, the application period will begin for those interested in entering this extremely important project".
"We are talking about an extremely important investment for everything that means rural communities that are not currently connected to high-speed internet networks. Through this project, we will ensure that approximately 1,000 localities will be connected to high-speed internet of at least 100 Mbps and automatically to 5G-type infrastructure. On the other hand, we are talking about reaching a target that we have set ourselves to have covered over 98% of the areas that are within the intravilan of the localities in Romania, following the analysis that we have today together with the other competent institutions from approximately 1,500 localities, where some even have 4-5 inhabitants, there are still under 500 localities that do not have a high-speed internet connection", explained Bogdan Ivan, at the end of the Thursday meeting of the Executive.
The project will be implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization, the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration, the National Authority for Community Management, and private companies.
This investment is part of the government's strategy to digitize the Romanian economy and society. The government believes that high-speed internet access is essential for economic growth, job creation and social inclusion.
