Romanian minimum wage increase in the works: officials working hard on the bill

The Romanian government is currently working on a bill to increase the minimum wage. The Ministry of Labor is leading the effort, and Minister Simona Bucura Oprescu has stated that she and her team are working diligently on the project. The European Commission is also monitoring the process.

However, there is disagreement among employers' organizations regarding the proposed wage increases. As a result, Marcel Ciolacu, the head of the government, has announced that he will convene the National Tripartite Council. This meeting will aim to reach a consensus on the final value of the increase.

In recent statements, Minister Bucura Oprescu has also discussed the development of a new wage law. She has stated that "consultations have been carried out within the framework of social dialogue with the representative trade union federations of all occupational families."

The Minister of Labor has also explained how the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) will contribute to the wage increase. She stated that "the wage law is a very important milestone within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) - Milestone 420 - which must be met by Romania. For this reason, the Ministry of Labor and Social Solidarity is also in constant contact with representatives of the European Commission."

"The entire process of creating the new wage law has been and remains transparent and open, with the main objectives being to eliminate inequalities from the system and stimulate performance," concluded the Minister of Labor.
