Romanian New Car Sales Surge by 33%, Electrified Vehicles Market Share Reaches 23.5%

New car registrations in Romania soared by 33.2% in April 2024 compared to the same period last year, driven by a 46.8% jump in the "electrified" segment, which now holds a 23.5% market share, according to data released on Monday, May 13th, by the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).


Overall, new vehicle registrations increased by 38.3% year-on-year and 40.9% compared to March 2024.


SUVs Dominate Market Share, Electrified Vehicles Gain Ground

In terms of market share, SUVs remain the top segment with a 45.8% share (up 41% from April 2023), followed by the C-Class with a 31.2% share (+32%) and the B-Class with a 15.1% share (+26.1%).

By fuel type, gasoline and mild hybrid cars saw a 29.9% increase in registrations in April compared to the same period last year, reaching a 64.3% share of the total market.

Diesel and mild hybrid diesel cars also recorded a 27.4% increase and hold a 12.2% market share.


Green Vehicles Gain Momentum

"Green" vehicles, including fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars, as well as full hybrids (which also have electric propulsion without external charging), held a 23.5% market share in April 2024, exceeding the 12.3% share of diesel engines, including mild hybrid diesels, by 11.3 percentage points.

Within this segment, fully electric cars accounted for a 5.5% market share in the period analyzed, compared to 12.9% in April 2023, while plug-in hybrid cars held a 3.3% share, up 11%.

Top-Selling Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Models

APIA's data reveals that the top three best-selling fully electric cars in April were:

  • Dacia Spring - 265 units (-13.4% vs. April 2023)

  • Tesla Model 3 - 150 units (+50%)

  • Renault Megane - 52 units (-30.7%)

In the plug-in hybrid category, the top sellers were:

  • Toyota RAV4 (46 units, +228% April 2024 vs. April 2023)

  • Ford Kuga (42 units, -44.7%)

  • Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLE - 37 units each


Hybrids Without External Charging See Strong Growth

Hybrid cars without external charging were led by the Toyota Corolla (436 units, +315%), followed by the Toyota RAV4 (239 units, +291%) and the Toyota Yaris (239 units).


Commercial Vehicles and Buses Post Strong Gains

According to official statistics, light commercial vehicles and minibuses registered a 59.2% increase in April 2024 compared to April 2023, with light commercial vehicles without minibuses seeing a 48.8% increase.

At the same time, heavy commercial vehicles and buses reported a 113% increase in registrations, with heavy commercial vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes plus tractors) without buses showing a positive trend of 106% and heavy commercial vehicles (over 16 tonnes plus tractors) a 107% increase.
